When making this painting at the end of the 19th century, the unknown English master 'Kennet' must have looked at the work of the well-known genre painter William Hemsley (1817/1819-1906). As the son of an architect, Hemsley was destined to follow his father's career path, but his artistic interest showed early on and he taught himself to paint in his spare time. The choice of themes in his work shows his love for the everyday things in life, preferably what occupied children. 'Kennet' painted a winter landscape with children enjoying the winter snowfall. A few children roll forward a huge snowball, some secretly rejoice at the snowball attack they have in store for the parents in front of them or blow their hands warm from the cold, others again dance in the background around a large snowman. All these elements formed the recipe for an attractive and popular performance at the time. And they should be in this time when a good pack of snow, necessary for deep winter fun, is becoming less and less common.
