The Amsterdam painter Ernst Witkamp was, together with Nicolaas van der Waay and Jacobus van Looy, one of the first students of August Allebé, the illustrious director of the Amsterdam Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. He also received lessons from Barend Wijnveld, Louis Koopman and Jacob Olie. Witkamp was a genre and figure painter, was known for his history paintings and portraits, but also had other subjects in his repertoire, such as landscapes, still lifes and cityscapes. As a decorative painter, he painted walls and ceilings, also in collaboration with Nicolaas van der Waay or Hendrik Haverman. He was also an etcher and was well known for his illustrations for well-known periodicals. From 1894 to 1897 Ernst Witkamp was curator of the Museum Fodor in Amsterdam.
