Born in 1893, Evert Jan Ligtelijn was a self-taught painter who worked in his native city of Amsterdam for many years, though he also lived in Naarden and Gorssel. His views of Amsterdam in particular display a strong variation in style from hushed impressionism to powerful, highly individualistic impressions. Ligtelijn painted portraits and still lifes as well. He also travelled the world, including trips to North and South America.
