Evert Pieters, born in Amsterdam in 1856, left at the age of 23 to the Academy of Visual Arts in Antwerp. After a stay in Belgium and Paris, he settled in Blaricum, where the Gooi peasant population inspired him to paint sunny farm interiors with mothers with children playing and gardens in bloom. His southern, colorful palette distinguishes him from other Gooi painters such as Neuhuys and Kever. During this Gooi period, the Pieters family became friends with art collectors William and Anna Singer, who live in the house De Wilde Zwanen (now Singer Museum). The Singers also buy his work. Pieters paints various canvases with sunny gardens with lots of flowers in which women in fashionable clothes figure. Some of them would show Marie and Anna. This summery, casual atmosphere is also evident in this painting.
