The painter-sculptor Evert van Hemert was known for his plump female images. Sturdy and round, with small faces and executed in bronze or paint, they exude an earthy cheerfulness. The same goes for his animals, which range from tiny seals to outsized cats. Evert van Hemert was extremely driven and serious in his artistry. His images are the result of a long process. This starts with shaping in wax or clay, then casting, sanding and grinding, patinating and finally applying the details. As a result, his images become personalities, closely connected to the person who Evert was. For his paintings, the artist found inspiration in his daily environment and in Friesland, where he settled in 1997 in the village of Kolderwolde. Themes such as air, light and emptiness often return in his paintings.
