Ferdinand Oldewelt was a refined impressionist, who had learned to bring colour into his work after the Amsterdam academy in Antwerp. He also had organizational gifts: he was director of the Minerva academy in Groningen (1896-1903) and of the academy in Rotterdam. His oeuvre includes cityscapes, interiors, portraits and still lifes, especially of flowers. He also painted peasant interiors in Drenthe. At the age of 65 he settled in Laren, where he mainly painted still lifes. The artist's work is in the possession of the Singer Museum in Laren and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
