The family of the genre painter and writer Francesco Mosso had an important position within the Turin bourgeoisie. A career as a painter was therefore not an obvious choice at first: he was sent to the University of Turin to study law. Soon, however, he chose art over law and enrolled at the Accademia Albertina delle Belle Arti in Turin. Here he took lessons with Enrico Gamba (1831-1883), maker of landscapes and history, genre and animal pieces, with the history painter Andrea Gastaldi (1826-1889) and the genre painter Alberto Maso Gilli (1840-1894). The landscape painter Marco Calderini (1850-1941), fellow student and the first biographer of Mosso, writes that Mosso attached great importance to the study of the old and modern masters for his artistic training. For this he visited museums and exhibitions, which he visited on his regular trips to Florence, Naples, Nice and Beaulieu. In 1876 Francesco Mosso settled in Rome, where he was tutored by Cesare Maccari (1840-1919), painter of portraits, history paintings and genre scenes, and sculptor. Mosso, who died young, left little work behind. 'Femme de Claude' (collection Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna, Turin), depicting a young woman on a sofa in her boudoir and presented for the first time at the 'Promotrice delle Belle Arti' in Turin in 1877, is regarded as his most important work. A view of Pozzuoli and a few of Sorrento show that Mosso was also a gifted landscape painter.
