Provenance: Mr. M.J. Schretlen Amsterdam; A. Staring, 1943.

Frans Arnold Breuhaus de Groot received his initial artistic training from his father, Frans. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, where he also began his career as an etcher, draftsman, and painter. In 1847, he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam and continued working there until 1861. He specialized in landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes, which he captured in a well-considered composition with a sharply defined brushstroke. His seascapes were often depicted against a backdrop of stormy weather, characteristic of the Romantic style of that period. He was also a skilled watercolorist.
