The oeuvre of the Belgian painter Frans van Tongerloo consists of realistic to impressionistic landscapes, portraits, interiors and still lifes. During the First World War, he and his brother Georges (also a painter, 1886-1965) lived in the Netherlands. Here he mainly painted dune and polder views. In the Netherlands, his style evolved into a modernist style under the influence of contemporary artistic developments. Van Tongerloo was awarded several times for his work in his homeland; in 1942 he was awarded the Prize of the Belgian State. His paintings are included in the royal collections of both Belgium and the Netherlands.
