Franz Marx, born in Munich, was a student of landscape and animal painter Angelo Jank (1868-1940) and the animal painter Heinrich von Zügel 1850-1941). Marx partly followed his teachers in his choice of subject: animal pieces form an important part of his oeuvre. He also painted genre scenes and flower still lifes. The city of Munich has included the painter's work in its art collection, as has the Bavarian National Museum there.
