Fredrik Nachtweh was educated at the Deventer Drawing School and continued his education at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam where he was taught by August Allebé. Nachtweh was a versatile artist. He painted cityscapes, especially of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, landscapes, still lifes, portraits and genre scenes in the style of the Hague School. He worked in a recognizable, atmospheric, somewhat tranquil style. Nachtweh was a member of Arti et Amicitiae and participated in various exhibitions, such as the 'Living Masters' exhibitions. In 1884 he became a teacher at the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam. His students included Floris Arntzenius and H.A. from Ravenswaaij.
