In the 1950s and 1960s, Frieda Hunziker was considered a remarkable and progressive artist. Initially, she was a drawing teacher until she started working freely herself in the 1930s. Her early work is characterized by a simplified, realistic style. In 1948 she came to complete abstraction. The year before, she was one of the founders of Vrij Beelden. This group of artists exhibited regularly at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and took a full place in the pursuit of non-figuration alongside the Experimentalists and Cobra. Hunziker was the only woman in the group and also one of the most active members.
