Klimsch studied at the academy in Berlin. Together with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikow, he founded the Berliner Sezession in 1898. Klimsch was formed artistically mainly through his study trips to Italy (1895-1901) and Greece (1909). Klimsch regarded the latter journey as the decisive turning point in his career. His style, which was initially related to Jugendstil, was subsequently determined by classicism. Klimsch gained fame mainly for his female nudes, but he also made portrait busts and monumental works for public space.
