Little is known about Gabriel van Schnell. We know that he resided in Worthing, Sussex and his portrait was painted by Scottish Dame Ethel Walker, now in the National Gallery of Canada. This is particularly astonishing given the quality of his works. From small sketches of grumpy landlords, to dreamlike compositions that echo the radical freedom his contemporaries were exploring, to the illustrated letters from friends travelling around the world, his works are beautifully executed. They provide an interesting insight into the mind of a seemingly eccentric and uniquely imaginative artist whose life remains a relative mystery.
