Around 1900 Georg Sauter was an internationally renowned artist. Born in Rettenbach (Germany), he started his artist career at the Munich Academy. However, the strict academic discipline there made him decide to move to London in 1889. There he married the sister of the writer John Galsworthy and through her ended up in art-loving and wealthy circles. Through her he also met James McNeill Whistler, whose influence is evident in the large surfaces and silver coloration in Sauter's work. Until 1917 he was a celebrated and successful painter and art critic in London. In 1917 he was called up by Germany for military service. He recovered with difficulty from the horrors of war that followed. After a stay in Rome, he settled in the artists' colony Brannenburg in Bavaria around 1933.
