Landscape painter and contemporary of B.C. Koekkoek. He was a student of P.G. Westenberg (1791-1873). In the years 1835-36 Roth made a study tour through Germany along the Rhine and Ruhr, as more romantic painters did. Roth lived most of his life in Amsterdam, with a few short stays in Opheusden as interludes (1878-'79 and 1885-'86). Roth mostly painted wooded landscapes, but also some city and river views. From 1839 he was registered as a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. He taught, among others, Elias van Bommel and C.P. 't Hoen.
