G.H. Breitner is an important impressionist painter of Amsterdam’s city views, setting down the street life onto canvas with bold, sweeping brushstrokes. He settled in the capital in 1886. Breitner also painted figures, nudes and military subjects – he was fascinated by horses and their riders. He etched as well but was a major Impressionist chiefly in his watercolours.
