George Lourens Kiers usually painted harbour, sea and river views. After his apprenticeship with the marine painter Louis Meijer and a period in Drenthe, he returned permanently to Amsterdam. Initially he painted extremely accurate, romantic cityscapes. A popular place was the Amsterdam IJ with its ships, harbours and locks, where major changes took place in the second half of the 19th century. In his later work, especially after 1900, the influence of the impressionism of the Hague School is clearly visible.
