Gerard van Nijmegen, born in 1735 in Rotterdam, started out as a decorative painter but soon grew into a painter of compelling landscapes. His talent did not come from a stranger: Van Nijmegen was trained by his father, Dionys van Nijmegen (1705-1798), who in turn was a student of Jacob de Wit (1695-1754). The painter portrayed untouched natural areas in an excellent way, preferably in capricious weather conditions. He was probably inspired by the mountain and river landscapes he saw during his 1788 journey along the Rhine, of which he kept a diary. The scenes in his romantic paintings depict the unpredictability of nature in a narrative way. The howling of the strong wind is almost audible and palpable.
