Luminist painter Gilbert Hansen depicted landscapes, figures and animals. Luminism was a movement at the beginning of the 20th century and related to the preceding pointillism, in which a strong emphasis is placed on the effect of light. Wide, juxtaposed, bright brushstrokes are its characteristic features. Hansen was educated in art at the academy in Liège and, with the aid of a scholarship, resided in Italy in the years 1929-34. The Museum voor Waalse Kunst in Liège owns work by Gilbert Hansen.
