Provenance: Galerie Maris, Amsterdam.

Gust Romijn was one of the artists who radically broke with traditional art after the Second World War by means of abstraction and experimentation. He was a member of the Liga Nieuw Beelden, which originated from the famous artist group Vrij Beelden (1947-1953) to which the Cobra painters also belonged. Romijn initially studied to be an architect and started making paintings and sculptures in 1943. His abstract expressionist paintings are characterized by a turbulent paint application and a rich multi-colouredness graduating to deep black. In the 1990s, his work became more geometric.
