Gustave Flasschoen is one of the Brussels painters who consciously chose impressionism between 1900 and 1920 to depict reality. His oeuvre is varied and surprising. It includes clear beach views with elegant figures as well as tonal cityscapes, harbors and beaches with ships and fishermen. Drawn by the exotic, Flasschoen painted for some time in North Africa. He also visited the Netherlands. Dutch landscapes and representations of women in traditional costume, such as Katwijk fishermen's girls and Zeeland peasant women, bear witness to this.
