Painter of realistically painted genre and history pieces in a warm, almost Rubenesque palette. Was one of the most prominent history painters in Belgium. After his education at the Academy of Ghent, he spent some time in Spain where he was inspired by the work of Velasques. Vanaise made a number of monumental paintings and murals. He was also an accomplished portraitist.
