Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek was the son of the landscape artist M.A. Koekkoek and belonged to the third generation of Koekkoek painters. His father’s influence is clearly evident in his grand romantic landscapes with impressive groups of trees, diminutive figures and livestock. He lived and worked in Amsterdam and also for a time (around 1865-1890) in London, where his nephew Hermanus jr. ran a gallery. Pieter Hendrik must have been a true nature lover and usually signed his paintings 'H.P. Koekkoek'.
