The talented painter of livestock Hendrik Savrij was the son and student of the still-life painter Martinus Savrij in Haarlem. He was born in this city in 1823 and continued to live until his death in 1907. His sister, Cornelia Johanna, was also a painter and later his son, Henri Savrij, would also make a name for himself as a painter of landscapes with cattle. Hendrik Savrij continued the tradition that began in the 17th century with Albert Cuyp and Paulus Potter by painting artistically suited, beautifully modeled cattle in Dutch pasture landscapes. His contemporaries included the Hague painters Pieter Stortenbeker and Jan de Haas.
