Hendrik Valkenburg received his first drawing lessons at the Drawing School in Deventer and then at the Academy in Antwerp. He painted genre paintings, including fishermen in Zandvoort, some landscapes and peasant interiors in Twente and in the Gooi. After 1873 he mainly worked in and around the Gooise village of Laren. The peasant scenes that he painted in his 'Larense period' are striking because of their intimate atmosphere, their special light and their rich colours.
