Hendrik Vettewinkel was destined to succeed his father as a house and ship painter, but opted for a life as a painter. He specialized in depicting ships, harbour and seascapes. Vettewinkel was self-taught, and practiced painting figures. He then made various figure and genre pieces before devoting himself to marine painting. Vettewinkel was a member of the 'Felix Meritis' society in Amsterdam.
