Henri Robbe, the older brother of the Belgian animal painter Louis Robbe, was initially a music teacher in Paris but joined his brother in Brussels in 1840. There he developed into a good and successful painter of romantic compositions with flowers and fruits. His work was praised in exhibitions far beyond the border. The rose, a flower grown in many shapes and colors in the second half of the 19th century, plays the leading role in many of his bouquets.
