Herman Richir was a successful Belgian painter and pastel artist of mainly fashionable portraits, figures and nudes. The artistic talent and eye for detail that he displayed in this work earned him a number of important portrait commissions among the Belgian haute bourgeoisie. He also painted King Albert I and Queen Elizabeth of Belgium on commission. Between 1894 and 1889, Richir was educated at the traditionally tinted Academy of Brussels, an institute where he would become a teacher from 1900 and later also a director. In addition to being a painter, he was also a designer of posters and banknotes and made a number of murals.
