Born in 1943, Hetty Heyster is best known for her animal sculptures. Out of a deep love for animals, she studies the appearances of different species. She is concerned with both the characteristic shape and the essence of the animal species. 'The energy of the animal must be felt under the skin', says the sculptor. Unnecessary detailing is therefore avoided. Hetty Heyster finds her subjects mainly in the Amsterdam zoo Artis. There are also some statues of her hand, including two large cheetahs, an armored rhinoceros and the well-known gorilla with young.
