Hubert Ritzenhofen was born in Amsterdam to German parents. At the age of thirteen, the family moved back to Düsseldorf, where Ritzenhofen attended the Kunstgewerbeschule, a vocational school for the arts. He then continued his education at the academy in Düsseldorf and joined the Künstlerverein Malkasten. He continued to live and work in this German city all his life, but made trips to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. He visited the Netherlands more often, including Amsterdam and Groningen, and he painted fishing scenes in Katwijk. Although Ritzenhofen also paints figurative subjects, such as the holy family, or a reading girl, his oeuvre consists mainly of cityscapes and landscapes. In an impressionist style, he emphasizes light effects, and the cloud cover often plays a prominent role in this.
