This Belgian artist was trained at the academy in Brussels, and also in the studio of J.F. Portales and his father François. He mainly painted landscapes, portraits and figures, but also still lifes. Initially, Verheyden worked in a realistic style with dark tones, but from about 1880, under the influence of Hyppolite Boulenger, whose impasto brushstroke he greatly appreciated, he developed a more impressionistic, lighter painting style, which was once described as 'dreamy and sensual'. Verheyden was a member of the famous painting group 'Les Vingt', and taught Anna Boch.
