Jan Evert Morel II lived and worked in Amsterdam for most of his life. The son and probably also pupil of the marine and portrait painter C.J. Morel, Jan Evert Morel II was primarily a landscape painter, producing romantic pictures which the Belgian painter E.J. Verboeckhoven often furnished with figures. He also worked briefly in the picturesque town of Oosterbeek, where many gifted artists came to work en plein air in the tradition of the French Barbizon School. Most of Morel's idyllic landscapes are small and painted on panel.
