With the exception of a single landscape, Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht mainly painted and drew military scenes and figures. These depictions, set up in an impressionistic free touch, testify to a very thorough knowledge of military customs, uniforms and weapons. In addition, his ability to paint large groups of people in a balanced composition earned him many commissions for illustrating magazines and commemorative albums.
