Like his father, 'Jan' Simon sr, Jan Knikker is considered to be one of the after-bloom of the Hague School. He lived and worked in this city for most of his life. He specialized in painting impressionistic landscapes and lively cityscapes, in which the depiction of a certain mood and atmosphere was paramount. His cityscapes in particular were very popular abroad.
