In his work, Sluijters sought to express strong inner feelings through the transformation of visible forms and an exuberant, unrealistic use of color. This is evident in this setting sun, which he painted in Zeeland and which, according to his daughter Lies Kuijper-Sluijters, can be dated to around 1938. It therefore occupies a special place in his oeuvre, as landscapes primarily appear in his early work. The second part of Sluijters's painting career, after 1920, is characterized by a moderately impressionistic, figurative style. It was the period in which he was considered the leading portrait painter of the Netherlands. He commissioned numerous paintings of prominent compatriots from academic circles, the music and theater world, and the business world.
