Literature: M. de Haan, 'Loeiend Goed. De koeien van Jan Vrolijk (1845-1894), een vergeten meester van de Haagse School', Den Haag 2002, pag. 60, afb. 11 (in kleur).

The Hague Impressionist Jan Vrolijk received his first painting lessons from his brother Adriaan, who had made a name for himself as a member of the Hague School. After his training at the art academy in The Hague, Jan Vrolijk began working outdoors, setting out early in the morning with notebooks and canvases to sketch livestock in the fields until late in the evening, later working the scenes up in his studio. Demand for his exceptional watercolours was already high during his own lifetime among both Dutch and foreign buyers. Vrolijk was an active member of Pulchri Studio and regularly showed his work there. His work can be found at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and in other collections.
