Before he decided to become a painter, Jean-François Raffaëlli was an actor and played at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. He was apprenticed to the history painter Jean Léon Gérôme, and made his Salon debut in 1870. Initially, Raffaelli painted genre scenes, and from 1879 onwards, Parisian city scenes became his main theme. His subject matter was both the daily life of the 'haute bourgeoisie' and that of the lowest classes. He also painted landscapes, portraits, (flower) still lifes and oriental scenes. The artist moved in the circle of the Impressionists, and took part in their exhibitions in 1890 and 1891. Raffaelli also made remarkable designs for posters as a graphic artist and illustrator.
