The Belgian artist Jef de Pauw preferred to paint (snow) landscapes (especially the area around his later hometown of Temse), portraits and still lifes. He followed courses at the academies of Sint-Niklaas (1904) and Mechelen (1906). Initially his work is expressionist, then De Pauw paints in a luminist style, with a very personal and striking color palette. De Pauw made study trips to France, worked in Paris, Rosières - where he met Claude Monet - and the Côte d'Azur. He also stayed in London, where William Turner's work impressed him a lot.
