The work of the Hague lawyer-painter J.A. de Jonge is very popular these days for its carefree subjects and vivid, bright colors. The blond beach scenes with children playing, landscapes, figures and cityscapes that he painted exude a modest, cheerful atmosphere. His work was loved by contemporaries and his name was mentioned in the same breath as that of 'greats' such as Arntzenius, Gabriel and Mesdag. De Jonge mainly worked in chalk, charcoal, watercolor and gouache, with which he could quickly record his impressions. He also painted and drew during his many travels abroad.
