Johan Meijer, born in Zwolle, attended the evening class at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts for three years (1907–1910). There he was taught by, among others, Arnold Gorter, who, like Meijer, moved from Overijssel to Amsterdam at a young age for his art education. Meijer remained Gorter's assistant for seven years, and his style was therefore strongly influenced by his teacher, although he used the color palette of the Neo-Impressionists at the beginning of the 20th century. This is clearly visible in this work, which he painted in fresh green, blue, and yellow colors. He signed it in red, as he did with all his summer scenes, in contrast to his winter scenes, which he signed in blue. From 1912, Meijer lived in the Gooi region and later in Blaricum. The annotation for this painting mentions ‘Blaricum,’ and we likely see the Reformed Church on Torenlaan in the distance here.
