Historical depictions and narrative genre scenes with a cheerful or serious undertone were the specialty of the painter Johan Michaël Schmidt Crans. He was born in Rotterdam in 1830 and was also educated at the academy in that city. He must have had a talent for painting, because around 1852 he left for Paris to take lessons with the famous portrait and history painter Arie Scheffer. He then settled permanently in The Hague. In 1873 Schmidt Crans became a teacher at the Academy of Art in The Hague. The painter also signed with 'J.M.S. Crans'.
