Johan ten Klooster, born on Java in Indonesia, served in the KNIL and used his leave periods in the Netherlands for painting lessons. From 1919, when he settled permanently in Veere, he lived and worked alternately in the Netherlands, New Guinea and the Dutch East Indies. He preferred to paint tropical landscapes, birds and horses. After settling in Veere, he mainly focused on painting cityscapes and polder landscapes.
