Johannes Gijsbert Vogel came to the studio of Andreas Schelfhout in 1849 as an apprentice. He learned to sketch in nature and to compose ideal landscapes in his studio on the basis of this. Initially, Vogel's preference was to paint views of Drenthe heathland and the landscape around Kortenhoef. In the 1990s, a turning point in his work became noticeable. Under the influence of the painters of the Hague School, he started to paint more and more impressionistically. His repertoire of subjects also expanded with forest views, river views and a single city and village view. In 1892 the painter married Margaretha Roosenboom, Schelfhout's granddaughter and gifted painter. It is believed that she had a major influence on his artistic development in the 1990s.
