Joseph de Smedt painted figures, portraits, historical and allegorical representations, usually in large format. He was born in Antwerp in 1894 and received his education there at the academy. The subsequent apprenticeship with the decorator and history painter L.O. Merson in Paris was of great influence. Following this master, he also made monumental murals and designed stained glass windows
