The French painter Jules Grün experienced his greatest fame during the Belle Epoque period. He took an active part in the artistic life of Paris, portraying the celebrities of his time and painting still lifes and fashionable genre scenes with the Parisian nightlife as subject. From 1890 he also works on a completely different oeuvre: he made illustrations and caricatures for magazines and designed posters in Art Nouveau style for the crowded theatres, music halls and cafe concerts of Montmartre.
