Belgian painter, famous for his finely elaborated genre paintings and church interiors, decorated with colourful figures. He received his education at the academy in Antwerp, after which he made study trips to France, Italy, England and Germany. He then settled successively in Leuven, Brussels and Bruges, where the richly decorated Gothic cathedrals provide him with sufficient material for his series of church interiors. Already in his time he exhibited in Paris, London and Berlin.
