Julius was the son of Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen and brother of Gerardine. He grew up with sketching and drawing in and around The Hague, received painting lessons from his father at an early age and took lessons at the Teekenacademie. There he befriended Philip Sadée and W.C. Nakken. Between 1840 and 1870 the painter stayed in Oosterbeek in the circle of J.W. Bilders, Mauve and the Maris brothers. After that, mood and atmosphere continued to play a major role in his landscapes. The career of Julius van de Sande Bakhuyzen was particularly successful. A few cityscapes and dunes by him are also known, in which the weather again receives full attention.
