Although he studied for a short time at the academy in Munich, the southern German artist Julius Scheuerer was largely self-taught. He painted landscapes and game and hunting scenes, but he had the most success with his poultry scenes. This was probably due to the fact that he made an accurate study of the anatomy and behavior of these animals. Scheuerer came from an artistic family. His younger brother Otto was also a painter, and also specialized in depicting game, small cattle and birds
