Born in 1877 as the son of the famous Russian painter Ilya Repin, Yuri Repin was as artistically talented as his father. From the beginning of the 20th century, he caused a furore as a painter of historical scenes, lyrical landscapes and in particular as a portraitist. He received his first painting lessons from his father, but he was mainly shaped by the long study trip through Europe that they made together in 1893-1894. From 1899 Yuri attended the Higher School of the Arts at the Imperial Academy. As early as 1907, his portrait of his wife Vera with their first child attracted the attention of Pavel Tretyakov's daughter and the work was purchased by the Tretyakov Gallery for the Newest Artists gallery. In the spring of 1909 he moved to Kuokkala across the Finnish border, where he lived with his family in the yard of his father's Penaty villa and started a small painting academy. At the outbreak of the Winter War he moved, permanently cut off from his homeland, to Levanto near Helsinki where he died in 1954.
